A Message From Our Principal

June 22, 2018

Dear White Oak Families,

I hope that you are enjoying some fun this summer with family and friends! I wanted to share some exciting changes for the 2018-19 school year.

If you have driven past the school, you may have noticed that we are getting new fencing around the entire perimeter of the school. The fencing is durable, taller than our previous fencing, and is more aesthetic looking than rusted metal! We will have some new gates on Nelda Street that will lock instead of having to secure them with chains! In addition, we are adding a ramp by the stairs for those who have wheelchairs or strollers. There will be another gate and walkway to the primary playground added just west of the MPR building. (This new gate will be open in the morning to allow for school access from Nelda to the primary playground without having to walk through the grass. It will not be open in the afternoon as there is no supervision in that area.) As the project is complete in August, please remind your students that they should never jump the fence to enter/leave the school grounds to prevent all injuries that could occur.

We will have some staff changes for the 2018-19 school year. A few teachers are changing grade levels and Mrs. Farrar has chosen to move on to a new adventure at Arroyo Elementary, which means we will welcome a new teacher to our White Oak Family. We will also have a new health clerk as Miss Liz will be moving to Hollow Hills. As we continue to have students enroll throughout the summer, more changes could happen, so teachers will not be announced until August. Look for more information in your welcome letter!

Our staff has also voted to make some changes to the daily schedule for the upcoming school year. In order to have more productive time for teacher collaboration, we will be having an early dismissal day on the first Thursday of each month. On that specific Thursday, all students will be dismissed at 1:10 pm and teachers will meet for staff meeting business and professional development/training opportunities. In order to account for all instructional minutes our school hours will be 8:15 – 2:29 pm on all other days. I have included a schedule of special dates for you to start marking your calendars now!

And finally, we will be making a change to our lunch schedule. We are moving from 4 lunch periods to 3 lunches and will combine our kindergarten and first grade students to make the most effective use of our campus supervisor’s time and our play space. This year, the students will “Play First and then Eat” for their lunch period. Each lunch period is 40 minutes long and the students will start that break with playground time and then will come to the lunch area, clean their hands, and eat their lunch before returning to class. We are hopeful that this will prevent students from just throwing away food to get to the playground to play. This will be an entirely new process for the students, so we will take some time to teach the students this new schedule.

The office will be closed on from June 28, 2018 – August 1, 2018. We look forward to seeing all of you on the first day of school, August 15, 2018. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Stay cool and have fun!
